Board Registration Password v2.0 for Simple Machines Forum
What is a Mod?
A package (zip/gzip) with a set of instructions to modify your existing SMF to
add or remove functionality. An SMF mod contains instructions formatted in
such a way that SMF can install and uninstall the mod smoothly through the Admin center.
What does this do?
Once installed it will allow you to restrict people to enter a single board-wide password
(in addition to the normal requirements) to get registered.
Via the 'Admin Center: Edit Features and Settings' you will have the ability
to turn this feature on or off and change the password.
This does nothing to existing registered users! It's only a key required in order to
complete the registration process.
How can this be useful?
In my own situation I have a couple of private boards, both of which are
open to a large section of people.
I tried "Member Approval" but had a problem with that. People would
choose usernames that didn't tell me who they were, or I just plain didn't know the person.
Even though the new registeree should have been accepted I found myself going to a lot
of work trying to verify them. With a board password, I simply post the password in the
group's meeting hall & newsletter, and/or pass it around via email. If someone registers,
I know they've received the password. It's not totally secure: anyone who wanders in
the hall can read the notice, and emails can be intercepted. But it really works for us.
